Last year was pretty incredible and to get 15 wedding photo awards from WPJA is pretty amazing. Now with that said I never enter these contests because to be quite frank I don’t care about awards. I’ve been a wedding photographer for 10 years and my main mission is to serve my client and to make the best images for them. Not for self recognition or to boost my ego. However since I’ve been expanding out to Europe I felt like this would be a good way to get my brand out here. With limited connections out in Germany, I have to use every resource possible. ( I live in Winnipeg and Germany, yes it’s crazy and yes it’s expensive lol )
Just last year I was fortunate enough to do an engagement shoot in Santorini and Venice. It was amazing as it sounds and couples really have an asset with me being in two different places. It definitely costs a lot less to fly me over from Canada. Instead a train or flight from Germany usually runs around $150 to get me somewhere in Europe.
I have to thank all my couples who have trusted in me to capture their important moments. I also have to thank my partner Angie who had to take care of our now 1 1/2 year old during the times I had to go away for these shoots. You can imagine how it felt to say I’m going to Santorini for a few days to do a shoot while she stays home. She’s super understanding and supportive and I definitely owe her big time.
WPJA 2022 Wedding Photo Awards
Will I enter more contests like these in the future for more wedding photo awards? Probably. I think that they definitely have a way of pushing you further and to challenge you. However, I have to say that it’s been more satisfying making these photos for my clients than winning an award. So it hasn’t changed my philosophy on wedding photography and on why I do this.
It’s always for my clients. Their priceless moments and visual legacy that will forever be remembered by their children when we move on.
The emotional meaning behind it all is very powerful and an award is just a temporary recognition by my industry that I’m doing things well.
