Sri Lankan Wedding
Couple: Himath + Navi
This was the second Sri Lankan wedding that I’ve photographed and it was incredible. Himath and Navi had a sweet ceremony at St Ignatius Church with a banging reception that followed at the Fort Garry Grand Ballroom.
I loved the energy and vibrancy of this wedding.
Sri Lankan weddings are very similar to other Indian Weddings in terms of culture although performed a bit different in some cases. There’s the lighting of the oil lamps which signifies the joining of two families. Fire, water, and earth have always played a huge role in Hindu wedding ceremonies so I saw some familiarities with that. There were also a traditional drummer and dancers guiding Himath and Navi during their entrance to the reception which is also very common in Indian weddings.
The reception was so much fun with all the entertainment they had. The shoe game always brings out laughs and the kissing game was very unique. Instead of clinking glasses, they had couples perform a dance routine on the dance floor ending off in a kiss. Himath and Navi had to follow these routines out on the dance floor.
Sri Lankan Wedding
I remember the cake cutting where Navi started to feed Himath’s father first before she fed Himath breaking out tons of laughs and funny expressions.
The best expressions however I think were during the speeches as each parent had incredibly funny stories to share. Navi and Himath couldn’t contain themselves. It was so much fun.
After speeches, Navi who is an avid dancer lead a group dance performance during the reception. Dressed in traditional clothing the dancers spun and moved in harmony across the dance floor. Himath and others later joined near the end kicking off a big dance party.
There was so much love and happiness at this event and I couldn’t have been happier to witness it all. Thanks again for trusting me to capture your amazing day!
